What Are Cognitive Tests?

Cognitive tests are short tasks designed to exercise or observe a specific mental skill, such as response speed, selective attention, visual recall, or working memory. A browser test is not a complete picture of intelligence or health. It is a small task performed under particular conditions, and the result can change with sleep, stress, practice, hardware, screen refresh rate, and input device.

That is why CognitiveBench focuses on simple instructions and personal benchmarks. How Reaction Time Testing Works

A visual reaction time test measures the interval between a visible event and your response. In the CognitiveBench Reaction Time Test, you start a round, wait for the test area to turn green, and then click, tap, or press Enter or Space. The browser records a high-resolution timestamp with performance.now() when the round becomes ready and another when you respond. The difference is rounded to whole milliseconds.

The test uses five valid rounds so one unusually fast or slow response does not tell the whole story. Clicking before the color change is a false start and does not enter the score. A measured result includes more than your nervous system: display refresh timing, browser event scheduling, mouse or touchscreen latency, operating-system load, and anticipation can all add variation. The Stroop Effect Explained

The Stroop effect describes the difficulty people experience when the meaning of a word conflicts with the color of the ink used to display it. Reading a familiar word is often automatic, while identifying the ink color requires a competing response. When those two signals point in different directions, people typically need more time or make more mistakes. This makes the task useful for practicing selective attention and cognitive flexibility in a simple format.

How Memory Tests Work

These tasks are intentionally different: pair matching rewards location recall, sequence memory requires ordered visual recall, and number memory relies on retaining a symbolic string. Helpful habits include grouping information into chunks, repeating it mentally, minimizing distractions, and using active recall instead of repeatedly rereading the answer. A browser score reflects the task you practiced and the conditions of that session; it should not be presented as an overall memory capacity or medical assessment.

Practice effects have limits. Getting better at a reaction, Stroop, memory, sequence, number, or aiming task does not by itself prove a broad improvement in intelligence or everyday cognition. Pair these exercises with sleep, movement, learning, social activity, and breaks, and treat the results as personal feedback.
